As we start delivering the first blueberries of the season to our stakeholders across Georgia, we are excited to highlight one of our farm partners, Superior Berries! Superior Berries is a 200 acre farm located in Fargo, Georgia. Beginning blueberry production in 2004 as a diversification of Southern Pine, they are committed to innovation, progress, and responsible, sustainable land management. Superior Berries grows and hand picks primarily Southern Highbush blueberries but also grows Meadowlark, Farthing, and Legacy varieties. They are continually looking for new and better ways to grow and have 18 acres devoted to research where they pilot new farming techniques and crops.
General Manager of Superior Berries, Mike Bruorton, has a rich history in blueberry farming and has been in the industry for over 32 years. Bruorton is also the Vice President at Superior Pine Products - Agricultural Division as well as a past president of the Georgia Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association. Bruorton keeps the consumer top of mind in operations. He shares, “At Superior Berries we are committed to ensuring the best, sweetest product reaches our customers.” They do that by focusing on quality, taste and shelf life. Bruorton highlights Superior Berries first-class growing and packing practices, which allows them to meet those three standards.
According to Georgia Grown, Georgia is an ideal place to grow blueberries. Between the sandy, acidic soil and short winters, berries are given just the chilling they need. Today they are actually the number one fruit produced in Georgia, beating out the peach. Southern Highbush blueberries are the most common species grown with more than 50 varieties.
Blueberries pack a nutrient dense punch. Besides being rich in antioxidants, the Cleveland Clinic says one cup of blueberries provides you with 24% of your daily vitamin C intake, 36% Vitamin K, 25% Manganese, and 14% dietary fiber.
